KAMAYAN RECAP

Missed our Kamayan dinner? Don't worry, you've come to the right place:) All you need to know about our annual Kamayan dinner is down below!!

WHEN: Friday, October 21st from 5-7PM

WHERE: Sadler Center, Chesapeake BC

As a way to celebrate Filipino American History Month, we held our annual Kamayan feast! What does Kamayan mean? Kamayan is the traditional Filipino style of eating where a buffet of food is served on large banana leaves and eaten without utensils.

Who doesn’t like free food? We had delicious Felynn's Filipino catering all the way from Virginia Beach including Chicken Adobo, Pandesal, Turon, Lumpia, and Pancit. Everyone was well fed🥰

The dinner started with a little introduction from our amazing external director, Melvin Sein, who made this event possible along with his wonderful committee, Isha Tubera, Catherine Zimmerman, and Mia Lunati. This led to the exec 2022-23 video which you can watch below😇

Then, we all were treated to a lovely culture presentation from our culture chairs (Chabeli Yumang, Will Florentino, and Emily Ebalo) and external committee. We learned about the history of Kamayan and what we were eating!

After, our lovely president, Zeta Atoigue, introduced our first guest speaker of the night, Professor Aguas, who enlightened us on what it means to be a Filipino.

Each of us carries a story that is untold and with that, we shared a video with speeches from our guest speakers (Professor Gem Daus, Emilio Manuel Camu, Professor Roberto Jamora, Lady Bulilan, and Alumni Isabelle Tan) who unfortunately couldn’t make it to the dinner, but their lovely speeches were put together in the video below!

After the wonderful speeches, it was time to see some performances! The Carinosa dance was first up! Jessica and Ashley put on a lovely show<3 Then, we had Escrima! Abel and Peaches performed for us and they did not disappoint!

Overall, Kamayan was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated with us! 🤍🤍🤍
