A Note from the Culture Night 2020 Directors’ Chairs

Welcome to Culture Night 2020: Kaarawan. After over a year of planning that saw us attempt at least three different formats for this show, we are thrilled and proud to present this digital experience to you. Although we could never have imagined the path this production would take, we are gratified that this digital archive preserves the two most important facets of Culture Night: the incredible efforts and creativity of our members and a theme that echoes loud and clear throughout the Filipino American community.

When creating the theme for this Culture Night, we asked ourselves what about the Filipino American experience was still left unexplored--more specifically, the young Filipino American’s experience. The idea of a debutante seemed to come rather suddenly and yet made perfect sense. What better way to capture the complex relationships between generations than with a spectacular birthday gathering? What better way to show the hardships of growing up than with a headstrong debutante on the cusp of adulthood?

Even though you are not sitting in the Commonwealth Auditorium, waiting in anticipation, we sincerely hope you enjoy the show. Perhaps viewing it at your own pace, with your own imagination, will allow you to connect with these themes and characters in unforeseen ways. After all, at Kaarawan’s heart lay a universal idea: that bravery comes from being true to yourself.

And one last time, we offer our deepest gratitude to all those involved in this production: actors, singers, dancers, choreographers, coaches, crew members, donors. You made this show beautiful, and we hope you hold this show as fondly in your hearts as we do. Kaarawan is our love letter to you.

With love,

Your Culture Chairs

Traditional Dances

Kaarawan is a performance that celebrates Filipino culture, both modern and traditional. The choreographers of the traditional Filipino dances did their research and introduced a nostalgic aspect into a show set in modern day.

Q: What was the most exciting moment during a practice?

Ahlexus Bailey: “The most exciting part during the traditional dance rehearsal was when we finally started practicing the dance with the candles on top of the dancers’ heads! There were so many dropped candles at first lol, but they all got the hang of it quickly and did so well during the last few rehearsals”

It’s not a musical without exciting dance numbers, and our choreographers ensured that Kaarawan would feature current and upbeat pieces to engage the audience. Shout out to our amazing choreographers!

Q: Where did you find inspiration for some of your moves?
Amy Vu: “I found inspiration just listening to the songs multiple times and envisioning how that would work with the energy FASA always carries as a fun, welcoming, and large group of friends!”

Songs

Singing is just one of the many components that make Culture Night, and Kaarawan, an amazing production. A lot of hard work and dedication go into practicing these songs, and this process would not have been possible if it weren’t for the help of our song coaches!

Q: How does music and song entwine with this year’s theme?
Camille Zeraat: “The Philippine Anthem itself is a demonstration of unity for Filipino People.”

Despite preparing for a life after William and Mary, our seniors worked to create something beautiful in their wake. We could not have made Kaarawan everything it was without the help of these amazing people!

Q: How has Kaarawan changed in meaning for you?

Angela Tiangco: As a senior, Kaarawan felt to me like the final countdown to the end of my time in FASA. It was the last time I could really immerse myself into the family we built, and to find out we weren’t going to get to do the show was heartbreaking. Culture Night is what brought me into FASA, and I wanted it to be what sent me off to graduation and my alumnus status. A part of me still feels a little void where senior dance should be. But I think now, almost 7 months past what was supposed to be our Culture Night performance, it holds more a symbolic meaning. Culture Night has never really been about the performance or the story but about the memories. Kaarawan is no different. So sure, we didn’t get to put on our show and have our friends and family see the finished product, but I think we still got the best parts. The laughter during warm ups before acting rehearsals started, the confusion of harmonies during anthem, the blocking diagrams during group song, the sick moves in escrima fight scenes, the late night in swem after rehearsals. We got it all. So I guess in a way, the meaning never really changed. The timeline just shifted a little.

Kaarawan is indebted to our media team, whose photography, video editing, and logo design remains the cornerstone of our online production. They worked with exec in order to help facilitate the transformation of Kaarawan from a stage musical to a digital experience.

Q: What is one hope you have for Kaarawan’s final product?
Catie Nguyen: “Sadie is under immense pressure over the course of the play, and she faces issues regarding the dichotomy of her identity and what is expected of her. I hope for that drama and tension to shine through underneath the glamor.. because it's really formative for Sadie and it's what inspired me while editing the trailer and photoshoot.”

Although the past six months were not what we intended, FASA is more than just a production. We're a family.
